S%P Futures vs S&P Stocks

I noticed a lot of stock traders talk about futures how "they were up today" or "they were down in premarket trading." What is the correlation between sp/dow/nasdaq futures and sp/dow/nasdaq indexes? Does one influence the other?

you can buy and sell futures contracts on the S&P500, just like you can buy and sell outright shares or options contracts on the S&P500. the only thing different is the trading vehicle (futures, options, shares). an S&P500 futures chart appears just like an S&P500 stock chart in any same time frame.
