Trading from home: do you trade on a DSL, cable, T1, or?

Hello,

this question is for traders who are either currently trading from home or have traded in the past: what kind of Internet connection do you use? I guess dial up is really out of the question. T1 might be overkill for a home trading office. That leaves DSL or CABLE. which one do you prefer and why?

if your an active trader and you rely on real time data...then highspeed is the way to go. if your are more long term and make your decisions via EOD...your connection type has no bearing on your trading other than preference.

cable and dsl are both good candidates if you are trading from home. Of course, they both have their pros and cons.

With DSL, for example, you get dedicated bandwidth rather than shared, and you can choose to pay higher prices for higher data transfer plans. on the other hand, the speed you will actually get with DSL service is rather distance sensitive. that is, the farther you are from the nearest service provider's facilities, the less speed you will get.

Cable, on the other hand, is not distance sensitive. however, bandwidth is shared. that means, that if a lot of people are using cable in your neighborhood, you will get lower data transfer. all in all, they are both good choices, IMHO.

whether you prefer to choose one over the other depends on your particular situation. If you know you are very close to the nearest DSL provider's facilities, then go with DSL. Otherwise, go with cable.

I would not advise to go with T1 if you are trading from home. If you really need that speed and reliability, then you are better off renting a room office somewhere and trade from there.
